Question: Why americans associate poverty with african americans, drugs, and ghettos?

It is really sick that Americans view poverty like from africa or any development country. You can have a decent house and life without drugs and still be poor. Worse, Americans associate African Americans with poverty. I watch the Feed the Children sometimes .It is the program that helps and feeds America's poverty. These families dealt with poverty in America and they aren't the same stereotypes that Americans associate poverty. 1. Most African Americans are poor. No. We are not poor. Now, we are bless than ever. Many have enter entrepreneurship and business. I'm not saying that we have some are poor. We do but also majority of White (European) and Mexicans (or Lantios) Americans are in the poverty line. It is very disgusting that people just group one ethnic group and say that the poverty affected the group when there are other ethnic groups were affected as well. 2. They are poor because of drugs. No. Some are poor because they lost their jobs and it is hard to find a job to fit their skills. Some are poor because of family situations and problems. Some are disabled. Some don't have transportation. Some have an a degree and education but can't find work. You can't judge a person of why they are poor. The best thing you can do is to help the family. The causes of why is none of our business because we were not involved. 3. Ghettos Listen, you can be poor and not live in the ghetto. There are poor people live in a house in the neighborhood and barely pay on the rent. The media brainwash people that poor people live in the ghetto. Americans need to get their act together and help our people. We still have people in poverty. They aren't like the people in Africa or other countries, but they still need our help to get through tough times. No rant. This is a question. |

Interesting....especially since the rest of the developed world associates ghettos, poverty, drugs and crime with the US. |

I get your point, and i thin it's rather insane for somebody to associate Afro Americans with poverty, drugs and all sorts of bad things because of their dark skin. I live in Africa, right in Southern Africa; but i have a very beautiful life, much better than many white Americans for that matter- but that's just vanity. The fact is, if i see people of the opposite race doing stuff that's bad or illegal, why should i rant and rave? To err is human. White people, blacks, Latinos,Asians etc are doing all sorts of bad things the world over-so no need to put race on the fore! |

It is a fact that most African Americans are poor, just because there is a growing number of well off one's doesn't alter the current situation - but they have made a big step compared to how they lived in the 80's. In 63 years time I think poverty in the African American communities, will be reduced by a lot. And it's not just African Americans, most British Blacks are poor too (if you check statistics). Why should Americans help African Americans? That slavery and oppression is in the past now, and mostly ceases to exist - I am an Indian born in the UK, and the British had colonies in some areas of India for over 200 years, but we cannot all play the blame game - India was 60% poorer after the British left, but since then poverty in India has reduced by 56% and 800,000 Indians are moving into the 'middle class categories' every year - and many areas in India are becoming very cosmopolitan. We pulled ourselves up, so the blacks should do the same - we cannot all play the blame game for ever. The second point, drugs are a problem in the African American community - which is the root cause why many are poor - but that is not the reason why all of them are poor. That black segregation and ghettos hasn't completely died out yet, even over here in the UK most blacks live in segregated areas with one another - however the same can apply to Mexicans in the US and Pakis in the UK, many Ghettos do exist and it is an inevitable fact. There are problems in the African American communities, even now and these are undeniable. However if the new generation work harder at school, instead of getting caught into the same cycle which the majority strive through - the what seems to be endless cycle will eventually eradicate. |

Who the fuck knows. I would say white conservatives are even more racist than I thought they were; but then again racial tension is fucking stupid. Sorry, Charlie |

Only 23% of African-Americans live below the poverty line, sometimes people make it look like it's above 50%. |

I don't know how much time you have spent in the housing projects of the USA. It used to be my job to go there, and I saw much poverty, drugs and many black people. There is a higher proportion of black people in the housing projects. The drug culture is more rampant in the housing projects. White people will generally avoid these areas, and indeed is is smart of them to do so. Middle class black people will also avoid these areas. This is reality. Therefore, the general perception that white people have of housing projects is based to a large extent on simple reality. |
